The purpose of this course is to impart a practical understanding of machine knitting techniques and it is intended for those who have no previous experience of machine knitting.

  • Yarns, properties suitability for machine knitting, etc
  • Methods of casting on, binding off and different hem types
  • Increasing and decreasing stitches;
  • Pattern knitting: Cables, Fairisle, Tuck stitch, Slip Stitch, etc.
  • Correction of Fabric faults at the knitting stage
  • Use of the ribbing attachment
  • Techniques of neck shaping and neck band production
  • Production and assembly of the components of a patterned sweater
  • Garment finishing and pressing

The beautiful art of embroidery/beading is dependent on a wide knowledge of skills, techniques and materials used to create designs in varied textures and tones. Embroidery, Beading, Beaded Jewllery and associated embellishment techniques are used in Fashion, Interior design, Accessories, (handbags) and for making unusual gifts for Christmas, Birthdays and special Anniversary celebrations. Beginners are advised to choose just one or two categories in one course and concentrate on these. As teaching is by individual attention, the courses are also intended for people who already enjoy embroidery but who wish to learn additional techniques. All ages are welcome.

In addition to Summer Holiday Courses, 6 lesson courses on Monday mornings 10.30 - 12.30 are available from time to time during the year.

(Beginners welcome)


This is a two-day 2 day workshop and introduction to Mixed Media embellishment textiles for beginners and the more advanced student.

You will learn a variety of techniques such as the scaling up of traditional hand stitches and how to incorporate bonda web to make quick appliqué, creating texture and surface pattern which can be applied onto garments and accessories.

The workshop is a combination of demonstration and hands on sampling with alternative materials such as torn fabrics, mixed fibers, a variety of threads, metallic and raffia.

- Customising a garment /accessory

(Beginners welcome)


This is a two-day workshop and introduction into beading for the beginner and the more advanced student.

Each student will customise a piece of clothing, ie a skirt, jeans, T.shirt, dress, jacket, scarf or bag. You will learn about a variety of techniques such as beading, beading tassels, sequins, couching and use of bonda web to make quick appliqué to create a unique one-off garment.

(some basic sewing machines experience necessary)

This is a two-day introduction to creative free machine embroidery.
You will learn a variety of free machine techniques on fabric and a variety of materials, using vanishing muslin to create free machine lace, also the use of bonda web to make quick appliqué, creating your own fabric with surface texture and pattern which can be applied to garments, accessories and soft furnishings.

Tutor: Janice Marr, is a graduate of The Royal College of Art, London in Mixed Media Embroidery. She is a textile artist and designer based in London and works on a wide variety of projects from couture fashion, to film, theatre and fine arts.
